The cultural life in Moscow has always been rich with interesting events. The period of the Russia Forum is no exception. The best exhibitions and concerts taking place throughout Moscow from 30 January to 1 February will help participants and guests of the Forum digest a large variety of artistic and cultural events, all of which are masterpieces in their own way.


30 January

Concert – Denis Matsuyev

Denis Matsuyev is one of the most brilliant and gifted pianists of our time. The world music press sparkles with delight after his concerts. Matsuyev is a new star of world piano and one of the most in demand musicians in the world today. Denis Matsuyev’s concerts are booked out three years before they take place. At the moment he gives around 150 concerts per season in the most prestigious venues in the world, such as the Grand Hall at the Moscow Conservatoire, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the Gaveaux Hall in Paris, the Albert Hall in London, the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Tokyo Opera City, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Gasteig in Munich, the Musikhalle in Hamburg and the Megaro Concert Hall in Athens.

A virtuoso of the art of conducting, Alexander Lazarev took the pedestal at the Bolshoy theatre in 1973 when he was 28. Under his direction the opera troupe completed an unprecedented series of overseas tours, successfully performing in some of the most famous opera houses in the world. As a conductor, he has performed with the Munich Philharmonic, the French National Orchestra, leading orchestras in Britain and Germany, the USA and France, Canada and Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand. For a number of years he was invited many times to conduct the BBC London Philharmonic in the UK, after which he became head conductor of the Royal Scottish Orchestra. His concerts always leave an unforgettable impression.

31 January

"Swan Lake"

Swan Lake is one of the most famous and best-loved ballets. It has probably been performed on every ballet theatre in the world. Choreographers of many generations and various countries have been trying to comprehend the secret and philosophical depth of Tchaikovsky’s music to this day. The white swan itself, born out of the great composer’s fantasy, will always remain a symbol of the Russian ballet, of its purity and noble greatness.

The formation of the Russian National Orchestra took place in 1990, set up by Mikhail Pletnev, and was one of the most significant events in the history of music in Russia. From its first steps, the critics were literally stunned by the eminence of its artistic standard. The London press wrote that the orchestra, “evokes awe – is it really possible that mere mortals can play such a thing?” Today the orchestra, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘business card of modern Russian music’, is one of the country’s best travelled, and represents Russia in the most famous concert halls in the world.

This concert could become not only the jazz concert of the year – it is in the running for the title of the decade! Five world jazz stars, five brilliant musicians, five names in the top jazz lists and hit parades. These stars of jazz will get together for the first time on the same stage – saxophonist Eric Marienthal, bassist Jimmy Haslip, drummer Will Kennedy, guitarist Chuck Loeb, pianist Jeff Lorber. More irrefutable proof of the individuality of the programme is the Russian diamond, Sergey Chipenko, the pianist, composer and group manager, who will join the world stars exclusively in Moscow.

With a soft and gentle voice, the touching, sensuous and delicate Elen Segara is one of the most loved singers in France. The titles of her songs, most of which are written by her personally, nearly always feature the word ‘love’. In these songs is the same sincerity and feelings which Elen shares with her audiences.

Gypsy Kings

State Kremlin Hall
Concert begins at 7pm

The Gypsy Kings are loved for their expressive and passionate songs and world famous prowess on the guitar. The rather exotic and very attractive style of rumba-flamenco was formed mainly by the influence of their creativity. As part of their world tour, they will play their only concert in Moscow on the stage of the State Kremlin Hall. At their concert, the Gipsy Kings will play hits such as Bamboleo, Volare, Djobi Djoba and Esucha Me, as well as songs from the band’s new album.
